Paul states he is not “an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal . . .”
You don’t have to know everything about Jesus in order to follow Jesus. When you encounter Jesus, you experience the essentials of his character and personality: tenderhearted, devoted to the Father, engaging and warm, merciful and compassionate, wise and insightful, instructive, encouraging, forgiving, restoring, inviting, quick to serve. Jesus’s essential character is love.
Jesus is the goal and “forward motion” of which Paul writes in Philippians 3:13. The energy behind this forward motion is the attractive, compelling love of Jesus. When we fall in love, we don’t know everything about our beloved, but we know enough to want to enter more deeply into intimacy.
Take time to encounter Jesus. Take time to be quiet and receptive in the presence of the Living Spirit of Jesus. Let Jesus, the pursuer of your heart, woo you into a lasting love.
